Raising the bar: Singer/Songwriter Nev Nicholls has penned a new pub song.       Picture: Camron Richardson
Schooner crooner brewing a hit
A ROUSING pub song is about as Aussie as it gets, but it has been a long time between drinks for a new hit to emerge.
All that could change thanks to 80-year-old Nev Nicholls. His ditty It's Pub time Again is among 19 finalists in a song-writing competition searching for our next great country pub tune.
Mr Nicholls, from St Andrews in Sydney's southwest has been writ-
ing and perorming songs for more than 60 years, but said his latest tune harked back to the halcyon days of Aussie pub culture - and songs such as Slim Dusty's classic Pub With No Beer.
"In the good old days, every- body would go up to the pub for a drink and a game of pool," he said.
"Drinking beer was the Australian thing back then."
  Wagga Wagga songwriter Pat
Alexander, who penned Slim Dusty's 1980 hit I Love ToHave A Beer With Duncan, has also been named as a finalist for a song about a hotel called The William Farrer.
The winner of the Tooheys New Country Pub Song Competition, organised by the Australian Hotels Association to rekindle a true-blue tradition, gets a $2500 cash prize and performs at the 2012 Country Music Festival in Tamworth.
